Here’s how to get forklift certified…
Passing the forklift driving test and acquiring your certification is a great way to further your skillset. And for employers, having plenty of qualified forklift drivers on-site allows resource to be managed efficiently.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) requires that employers adequately educate their workers before using forklifts in the workplace. Anyone operating a forklift truck needs a certificate of basic training, which should be refreshed every 3-5 years as recommended by the HSE. Not only is driver training an essential part of remaining compliant, but it’s the only way to stay safe while working with forklifts.
Thousands of people are injured in accidents involving forklifts every year. It’s critical that you get the right training and documentation before operating any vehicle.
How to get forklift certified:
The first step is to find a registered instructor who will train you on both the practical and theory elements of forklift operation.
Accredited forklift driver instructors receive regular training and testing themselves, keeping them up-to-date with the latest rules and regulations.
The beginner’s course takes around 3-5 days to complete and includes a theory and a practical exam. Refresher courses can usually be completed in a day.
During the training, you’ll learn about:
- Forklift safety and the relevant government legislation
- Load capacities, truck weight and working with attachments
- Forklift controls and warnings
- Pre and post operation checks
- Operating the forklift
- Handling loads safely and correctly
- Refuelling and recharging
This will be taught to you through a combination of lessons delivered by your instructor, videos and the practical operation of a forklift truck with supervision.
What happens at the end of the course?
When you’ve successfully finished the course, you’ll receive a certificate confirming you’ve passed. You’ll also be given an operator’s ID card to keep with you. This isn’t a licence, as forklift driving licenses don’t exist, but it is proof of basic training.
